Atletico Game Write-ups
Game #1 v DUSC
Scorers: J.T., Shota, Cole, Matt & Theo
It’s good to get your first win in a new season and even more so with this being on a bigger field. We controlled the game from the first kick and looked sharp for having had a full weeks pre-season, as well as 2 regular sessions in the build up to this game. We scored a good opening goal after a good run & cross from Sean found J.T. on the back post to score with his first touch. Shota added a second shortly after to put us 2-0 up at the break. I reiterated my usual half time message of “the score is 0-0” to send the boys out hungry for more in the second half. 3 more goals came from Cole, Matt and Theo to round off a good opening game.
Game #2 v Stamford
Scorers: J.T. x 2
Having played Stamford only a few months ago in the State Cup Semi-Final, I knew this was going to be a good close game with them. Again we started the better team, dominating in midfield and not giving Stamford many opportunities to get into our half. But despite our dominance, we couldn’t find a goal so found ourselves 0-0 at half time. My message was to keep the pressure on in the second half but to remember that every team gets at least 1 chance in game. Stamford got their chance early in the second half to go 1-0 against the run of play and although I don’t like conceding goals, I was interested to see how we’d respond with having been the better team but now trailing. Matt but a great thru-ball through to J.T. who went around the keeper to calmly finish and bring the game to 1-1. Will Higgs hit a thunderbolt which hit the bar but we kept pressing for the winner. That came late on when J.T. converted from a Will Newman corner. A close game, a good test of our character coming from a goal behind but ultimately the right result for the better team on the day.
Game #3 v Cedar Stars Academy Hudson Valley
Scorers: William H & Ethan
Our 07 Super Y team played Cedar Stars this summer and lost both games to the better team. I knew we were in for a game here. After missing a week through being away on my course, it was good to get back and have a full week of training with Atletico. The sessions were intense and the boys worked hard. We were ready for this game. Again we started the better team, pressing from the very first kick. Will Newman had another good corner which Will Higgs scored from. With having a full bench of 7 subs, I wanted everyone who went on to play their part and keep up the same level of work-rate. J.T. & Inacio did this and when they both set up Ethan to score our second. My half-time message was to keep up the intensity for the second half. Cedar Stars were clearly the better team after the break and our defenders and goalkeeper kept us in the game which ultimately helped us win the game. I think the heat played its part as we looked tired but held on. Another good, rewarding win.
