2019 Fall Season Game Reports

Game 10: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Terryville Rowdies

Venue: Greenwich Catholic, CT

Date: 11/10/19 12:30pm KO

Result: 1 – 1

Scorers: Mia,

Report: If there was a more determined performance all season from our Barcelona girls, then I never saw it! From the opening whistle, the girls got stuck into their opponents and didn’t give them an inch. With both teams playing so competitively, it wasn’t a game for the feint hearted. Early chances for Regina and Grace were well handled by the Rowdies keeper at one end, while at the other end, heroics from all four defenders (Sienna, Chloe, Sarah and Danielle) alone with Chrysi kept a determined Rowdies attack at bay. Two goal line clearances and many pick up amongst flying feet meant the scored remained 0-0 at the half. Second half started in the same manor wi5th both teams pressing for an advantage. The first breakthrough came from Terryville (whom had already won the National EDP 2 league) when they collected a clearance and immediately attacked the box, scoring low to the right hand side. Now this really was a test for our girls. Undaunted, they stuck to their tasks and were rewarded with the equalized 10-minutes later. A sustained attack down the right, then a switch of play to the left and a venomous strike from Mia from the end of the box brought the game back level. For the last 8-minutes, the Barca girls laid siege on the Rowdies goal in search of the winner, but no avail. Game ended 1-1. I’m so proud of the girls today and this season. A step up to the National EDP league 2 meant tougher competition. They grew each game and showed they belong at this level; Great season ladies, well done.

Game 9: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Middle Country Children

Venue: Eugene Auer Elementary School, Lake Grove, NY

Date: 11/3/19 3:00pm KO

Result: 3 – 3

Scorers: Mia, Grace, Cassie

Report: After such a gap between league games and the Columbus tournament, I was a little concerned the girls would be rusty. Add to that a light squad and the girls were up for a real challenge. The game started evenly, both teams on the front foot. MCC scored first from a well struck free kick, but Barcelona answered straight back with a combo between Cassie and Grace, resulting in a cross to the back post which Mia finished. This gave the Barca girls more confidence and 3-4 more great chances were created. However, the half finished 1-1. Second half started brightly for Barcelona. A through ball from Cassie saw Grace tuck in the bottom corner past the keeper to give Barca the lead. This stood until midway through the 2nd half when MCC scored from outside the box. Momentum shifted towards MCC and they got a go ahead goal shortly after. Now this was a backs-to-the-wall moment for the Barca girls. Concede the win or fight back for a draw? They chose the latter!! With a well fought challenge and through ball by Grace, Cassie sped onto the pass, rounded the keeper and shot into the empty net for the equalizer. Game ended 3-3. GREAT fightback ladies! You showed a lot of character and resilience to play as hard as you did, I’m very proud of you; well done.

CT Rush Columbus Weekend Tournament 10/12 & 10/13/2019

Game 1 (6): Shoreline FC Barcelona v Trumbull United Premier

Result: 7 – 1

Scorer: Mia (3), Cassie (2), Grace (2)

Game 2 (7): Shoreline FC Barcelona v Rush NECT

Result: 3 – 2

Scorer: Grace, Cassie, Sophia

Game 3 (8): Shoreline FC Barcelona v Chelsea Piers

Result: 1 – 1

Scorer: Reggie

Report: Great tournament ladies. In game 1, you started brightly. Ball movement, player movement and finishing were of the highest quality and hard for Trumbull to stop. Our three forwards scoring all 7-goals between them! Game 2 presented you with a very gritty and determined Rush team. Twice you had your lead equalized, but still you pushed and produced the goal of the tournament by Sophia with a top corner curler. Game 3 became a semi-final with a win needed to put Barcelona into the final. Chelsea Piers came out strong, scoring in the opening minutes and putting up a strong challenge for the Barcelona girls. Close chance after chance ensued, but no breakthrough. However, that changed in the beginning of the 2nd half with a top corner lofted shot from Reggie. With the game tied, Barca kept pushing for the winner and a place in the final. Unfortunately, it never came. Great effort ladies; loads of positives and many having to play through pain  due to injuries picked up in the tournament.

Game 5: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Cedar Stars Hudson Valley

Venue: Capelli Sports Complex, Warwick, NY

Date: 10/6/19 1:00pm KO

Result: 0 – 1

Report: Another well-played game by the Barcelona girls. Against a strong Cedar Stars team, we competed for every ball, possessed well and penetrated often. It is a clique “It was one of those game”, but in this case it was? Outshooting our opponent 20-shots to 5-shots, Barcelona did everything really well right except put the ball in the net!! Shot after shot, chance after chance created went begging. A well finished goal from Cedar Stars won the game in the 1st half; a left footed cross was met on the volley around the penalty spot, firing the ball into the roof of the net. Yet another great advertisement for the strong EDP National league. Well played ladies.

Game 4: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Smithtown Kickers

Venue: Greenwich Catholic, CT

Date: 9/29/19 12:30pm KO

Result: 2 – 2

Scorer: Grace, Cassie

Report: Great game played by two worthy teams. It seems like a broken record, but both teams tried to play good football and beat their opponents with possession based football. The girls rose to the occasion, even going 0-1 in the first 2-minutes and played bravely with the ball. The equalizer came midway through the 1st half with great combination play from Lisa and Sophia before setting Cassie wide to cross to the far post for Grace to finish with a side foot volley. Nothing less than the girls deserved. The 2nd half started the same as the first. Barca went 2-1 up after a great kick from Chrysi which Grace battled for, controlled and put Cassie in 1v1 with the keeper. Cassie finished coolly nosing Barca ahead. Smithtown equalized after Barca didn’t clear a corner and finished the ensuing scramble. The game ended 2-2. Another great performance ladies, by far the most complete display. Please keep up your hard work.

Game 3: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Sporting CT

Venue: Middletown, CT

Date: 9/22/19 4:30pm KO

Result: 1 – 3

Scorer: Grace

Report: Yet again, the EDP National Conference D2 league didn’t disappoint! The Barcelona girls played against a strong Sporting CT team that came out the blocks flying and put our girl’s under a lot of pressure. Stout defending and heroics from Chrysi kept the game level.  Eventually, the Barca girls found their groove and the game became an even contest. Some great combination play between Mia and Grace nearly led to the opening goal. Alas, at the stroke of halftime, Sporting pounced on a chance and scored.

The 2nd half again saw an even contest with both teams trading shots. Grace was a real threat up front for Barcelona and Chrysi was pulling saves left and right to keep the game close. Two goals midway through the 2nd half gave Sporting an unassailable lead before Grace pulled one back with 7-minutes remaining. Game ended 1 – 3. LOTS of positives ladies to come out of this game and against a good team in a strong league. Playing good teams will only get you better. Keep up the hard work.

Game 2: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Ginga FC

Venue: CT Sportsplex

Date: 9/15/19 4:00pm KO

Result: 0 – 1

Report: As the score line indicates, this was a very close game. Both teams worked hard on their possession game, but were met with very strong and stout defending. For the opening 20-minutes, our passing was excellent. However, in a back and forth game, the only goal of the game came with 2-minute left in the 1st half with a nice outside-box-shot from Ginga that was too high for Chrysi to handle. In the 2nd half, the Barcelona girls went toe-to-toe with the strong Ginga team, but the break through never came. This game was another great example of the quality the EDP league offers. Good work ladies.

Game 1: Shoreline FC Barcelona v Alleycats Premier

Venue: Greenwich Catholic School, Greenwich CT

Date: Sunday 8th 2019 12:30pm KO

Result: 4 – 0

Scorers: Grace (2), Mia, Brynn

Report: Having played this strong Alleycats team last spring, the Barcelona girls knew they were in for a battle. From the opening kickoff the game was a hard fought contest with both teams trying their hardest to get a grip of their opponents. Early running saw Cassie pull great saves from the Alleycats keeper, likewise, some last ditch tackling from Sarah and Chloe thwarted the Alleycats in front of goal. The breakthrough came after some good sustained pressure from Barca, resulting in a left foot volley finish from Grace. Not resting on that goal, Barca came straight back at the Alleycats and doubled their lead with a solo effort from Mia. First pulling a great save from the keeper, Mia pounced on the rebound to double the Barcelona lead.

The 2nd half saw Barca get a firm grip on the game with a stunning long range effort from Brynn before Grace iced the game with a poacher’s goal to finish the game 4 – 0. A great start to the season in EDP D2 and I look forward to building on this performance; Fantastic job ladies.
